The NAS is a complex and shared network of people, procedures, equipment and infrastructure that keeps our commercial flights safe and on time. NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration are working together on next-generation improvements to the NAS because they recognize the urgent need to safely integrate UAS into the nation’s complex aviation system.

Incorporating unmanned vehicles into national airspace benfits scientific research, national security, emergency response and disaster relief. But unmanned aircraft are grossly underutilized in these areas because they lack reliable collision-avoidance technology.

Numerica research scientist Jason Adaska, Ph.D., is leading Numerica’s efforts to create a sense-and-avoid capability to safely integrate UAS into the national airspace. Adaska and his team are working with Springs-based Colorado Engineering Inc. to model its USTAR collision avoidance radar for feasibility testing.

Today Numerica celebrates 15 years in business as a thriving research and development leader. We were founded in 1996 by CSU applied math professor Dr. Aubrey B. Poore to take his particular brand of math to market. As one of the first tech-transfer companies out of the CSU Research Foundation, Numerica has seen consistent growth every year since incorporation, recording impressive 154 percent revenue gains between 2006 and 2010 – a time when many companies were struggling in our tough economy.

The Tibbetts Award honors companies from across the country that exemplify the very best in the SBA’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. Numerica is one of only 44 Tibbetts Award winners nationwide. Winning companies were selected based on exceptional innovation, national R&D advancement, job and revenue growth, and broader benefits to their economic region. Father and son Aubrey and Jeff Poore, Numerica CEO and President respectively, flew to D.C. to accept the award, weigh-in on the future of the SBIR program, and attend a reception at the White House.

Numerica has been awarded four STTR and 63 SBIR Phase I and II government contracts since 2002, directly supporting a rich collaboration between industry and academic partners and speeding the transition from research to application. Applying for SBIR and STTR proposals is no small undertaking and the competition is fierce, so hats off to my brilliant co-workers at Numerica who make it appear effortless.

Numerica recently hired Becky Jensen (Colorado State University ’93) as Marketing Manager. Jensen brings to the position more than 15 years experience in public relations, branding, media relations and marketing strategy.

John Bradbury (The George Washington University Law School ’08), joins Numerica as Manager of Contracts/Counsel. As a former associate attorney with Denver-based McKenna, Long & Aldridge, LLP, Bradbury gained a strong working knowledge of intellectual property licensure and contract law.

Sabino Gadaleta, Ph.D. (Colorado State University ’00) rejoins Numerica as Senior Research Scientist after a five-year hiatus working for EADS Defence Electronics in Unterschleissheim, Germany, as a systems engineer. Gadaleta originally worked for Numerica between 2001 and 2005 after defending his Ph.D. in Mathematics thesis “Optimal Chaos Control through Reinforcement Learning” at Colorado State.

Numerica is looking for 13 elite candidates with advanced degrees in applied math, electrical engineering, computer science, statistics or other related fields. Current job openings include: software engineers (4), research scientists (5), computational scientists (3) and one paid graduate-level software engineer internship that reimburses in-state tuition. Nine of the 13 positions will work in Loveland, Colo., two positions will be filled in Dayton, Ohio, and two positions will be filled in Pasadena, Calif.

I admit I once shook a fist at my house and howled, “C’mon! Is that ALL you got?”after a rotten piece of trim fell and barely missed my head while I was cleaning out the flower beds. Owners Dennis and Noreen Houska have been donating blood for a long time, and they joined the National Bone Marrow Registry in 1994. Dennis’ bone marrow was a life-saving match for a young California boy with leukemia in 1995, so it’s easy to see why Dennis is so passionate about encouraging others to participate in bone marrow registration.

The Houskas also recognize the serious need for blood donations in the Fort Collins and Loveland area.
